After they ate, Wynter and Caleb sat at the dining room table carving the pumpkin he’d brought. Slices of the pecan pie—also from Caleb—sat next to their mugs of coffee. Caleb took the lead, carving out sleepy half-moon eyes and a sweet toothless smile and round nose. Somehow he understood that she did not like scary faces.

How could he know her so well? How could she feel so close to him so soon?

“This is the first time I’ve made dinner for a guy that I really like,” she said.

“But you’ve made dinner for guys you don’t like?”

“No, silly. I’ve never made dinner for any man I dated. In college we would just order a pizza, and then later when I was working in the museum program I went out with men who took me to restaurants. So, this is another first.”

“Seems like we are both hitting a lot of firsts with each other,” Caleb said, with a sexy grin. “What do you think it means?”

She felt her cheeks turn pink. “I don’t know,” she lied, and took a sip of coffee to hide her feelings.

“Yes, you do. It means we really like each other in a way that is new to both of us. And maybe surprising to both of us.” When she set her coffee down, his fingers gently swiped a hair off her forehead, then he bent close and planted a kiss there.

A sigh escaped her. How could someone so strong have such a sensitive touch?

He swallowed another bite of pie and said, “I even think it’s an interesting coincidence—or fate if you prefer—that we happen to be the two people chosen by C.W. Snow to inherit the bulk of his estate.”

“Yeah. I thought that too,” Wynter said. “He passed away before we even met, so it’s not like he could possibly know we’re dating.” She pursed her lips, eyebrows knit. “Is that what we should call whatever this is we are doing?”

“Absolutely,” Caleb said, moving closer, his voice dropping in pitch. “In fact, I’m really eager to move it forward to the next stage.”

“Meaning…the bedroom?”

“When you are ready.”

Considering the craving he aroused in her whenever they got close, Wynter was long past ready. She tilted her head, looking at this magnificent mouthwatering male, her mind racing. She had promised herself to keep up a strong guard wall against men like Caleb. Except that was not accurate. Caleb was totally unlike those men she’d made that rule for, completely different from anyone she had ever gone out with. And, fool that she might be, she trusted him.

Wynter got up and pulled Caleb to standing. “I want you now,” she said.

“Oh, I like a woman who knows what she wants.” His dreamy blue-green eyes darkened with a heat that was melting her on the spot. Then his mouth came down on hers, not a gentle kiss, but fierce and insistent, his hands running over her body. And Wynter began kissing him with a passion she had been holding back for too long.
